Circolo Vela Gargnano presents challenge for the 33rd America’s Cup

[Source: Circolo Vela Gargnano] Today, in the offices of the Lombardy Regional Council, the Circolo Vela Gargnano and the sports consortium “Green Comm Challenge” announced the launch of a challenge for the 33rd America’s Cup, a race with currently a single challenger, the Golden Gate Yacht Club from San Francisco. As stipulated by the “Deed of Gift” the regatta should take place in 2010 on yachts 90 feet by 90 feet, that means multihulls with a length and width of 90 feet, approximately 27 meters.

The challenge of Circolo Vela Gargnano – on the Garda lake (the second one in its history after the participation of +39 Challenge in the 32nd edition) was presented by the president of Green Comm Challenge Francesco De Leo, the legal counsel of Green Comm, lawyer Nicolò Bastianini, the president of Circolo Vela Gargnano Lorenzo Rizzardi, and the vice-president of the Lombardy Regional Council.

Angelo Glisoni, former Tornado world champion and Italian coach in the Athens and Beijing Olympics, will be in charge of the crew selection process. The design team will be supervised by UCLA professor Mario Gerla (one of the creators of Internet) and professor Giovanni Lombardi from the University of Pisa. The Turin Polytechnic school will also collaborate in the design.
